Peter Pauper Press Books

I only have a few of these lovely little books - but it is most certainly the start of a new collection. This first one is my most recent acquisition. Thrifted for a thin dime - "Alphabet Of Love":

I can't remember where I found "Simple Oriental Cookery":

"A Peter Pauper Press Book" - all of them have different and wonderful illustrations inside:

"Life's Wondrous Ways":

"The Merrie Christmas Cookbook" was the very first one I found. Most of mine were printed in the sixties.

I'm a book freak.
I really accepted this fact long ago.
It cannot be helped.
I love 'em.

At The Shop

I did some rearranging in our booth at Mountain Treasures the other day, and snapped a few pictures while I was at it:

Nobody here but us chickens:
A Salad Book, and a gorgeous salad bowl:
Pyrex, etc.
A neon Coors sign:

And Italian soaps on pretty little saucers:
That's just a glimpse of some of our items for sale.
Mountain Treasures is located at 13643 Tuolumne Road in Sonora, California.

What's Penny Wearing? #45 Another Vintage Sundress

Penny is all ready to hit a sunny flea market in this dress, another one of what I like to call my vintage "hippie" dresses:

you can't beat cool cotton, especially if it has pretty detailing and embroidery!

Once Upon A Time in Kelsey

Good morning. Tina here with a few more vintage images of the little town I live in, Kelsey, California.

Here and there, tucked into the hills are some old homes, and our old schoolhouse, church, and an old store still stand. A tall chimney stands surrounded by junk and a mobile home... It is sad, but as they say, it is what it is.

The caption on this home says "the house below the cemetery". No home stands there now.

Old Murphy place. There is a Mount Murphy which stands above Coloma but I don't know if it is the same Murphy. Very likely though.

Alfred and Kate Spargo. I love their nice big porch. They need to get busy with a weed eater though.

Roelke home and hotel built 1880s.

Joseph Smith residence. Son of Pegleg Smith. There's a story there, I will have to dig it out sometime.

Old Kelsey Post Office. We don't have a post office now, Placerville delivers our mail. They do a good job of it, but it separates Kelsey from all the other communities of the Georgetown Divide. Even our newspaper, the Georgetown Gazette, which is published on Thursdays, doesn't manage to reach our door until as late as the next Tuesday some weeks. It makes it hard to get to garage sales before all the deals are gone!

Rossi home, Chicken Flat.

Tom Allen's place.

The Kelsey church. When we first moved to Kelsey we voted in this church. Now there are so few people in our precinct that we can only vote by mail.

Just a quick little view of some vintage images of Kelsey.

Latest And Greatest Thrift Finds

I love reading all of my favorite blogs, and seeing their latest finds - and naturally I also enjoy sharing my own. So, here are the latest...
And I'll begin with the greatest! I have never found one of these Greetings From Placerville postcards before - I was thrilled! And I couldn't pass up this adorable little Lefton angel bell, either. Would you have?

Found this pair of egg cups before Easter, just in time to add them to my table decorations:
This sweet floral tea/coffee set was a Salvation Army find:
You couldn't really see it very well in that photo - here's a close-up:
I found a bright and beautiful vintage fiberglass tray:
Some vintage decals, a California bungalow postcard, and a piece of sheet music I didn't have - I LOVE that song:

"Although (although) we're apart, you're part of my heart, and tonight you belong to me...."

Pretty Little Flower

I picked a couple of little flowers on one of my walks, and put them in my little vintage crockery bud vase/jug:

I do not know what that orange flower is - but isn't it a pretty one?

Enjoy Your Easter Day!

We are looking forward to a lovely day and a wonderful dinner of Easter ham, and I just wanted to wish for all of you....

....a gloriously happy Easter day, too!
All the best to all of you from the Gold Country Girls.

Oh! And guess what?
The Easter Bunny DID come - a little early. And look at what he brought for us!

At 2.5 Points Plus (on Weight Watchers) for each piece out of this box of See's Candies, they will have to be eaten very sparingly.
I think I can do it.
Wish me luck.

Easter with Brach's, circa 1971

I found some nice advertisements for Brach's Easter candy in a 1971 issue of Better Homes And Gardens magazine. I have an enormous sweet tooth (or a whole mouth full of them!), so it all looks pretty good to me!

I haven't met too many candies in my life that I don't care for.
But the Easter Bunny doesn't visit us anymore.

Vintage Gunne Sax Patterns

I borrowed nearly all of these patterns from Lori, because I wanted to do a post simply to show you these wonderful Jessica McClintock Gunne Sax dresses skirts, and blouses. This one is from 1979:

The next two are from 1981:

And 1982:
And I just had to include this shot of my own vintage Gunne Sax skirt, which happens to have sold recently. I felt rather sad about letting it go::
And this pattern for a girl's version of a similar skirt, which I found at a thrift store.
Hope you enjoyed this little trip down Gunne Sax lane!
(All patterns say Gunne Sax by Jessica San Francisco, and are trademarked Jessica/Gunne Sax, Ltd.)

Spring, Shakespeare, Easter and Pets

I don't have much today. It was a busy week. We had a couple of rain showers, some stupendous sunsets... Our well pump has worn out and we have been out of water several times this week. We had a birthday dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant for our Mom-in-Law. My husband has started playing with his two softball teams. I think spring is sprung.
Yesterday I was in a play at the Placerville Shakespeare Club Social Meeting. We had been rehearsing since December. In April each year we celebrate Shakespeare's birthday.

Last Thursday we had our dress rehearsal. We were awful. I completely blanked on all my lines, I had known them perfectly the night before! I dreamt about the play all the night before, and then NOTHING. Our director took pity on us and allowed us to read from the script. I would share a few lines with you but after reading about the copyright I am terrified of doing so, so you will have to take my word for it that it was very witty. The author Justin Moran had fun with it!

Yesterday, at our first and only public performance, everything went perfectly! This little ten minute play (which we took 25 minutes to put on - go figure!) was written in Dr. Seuss style, mostly in rhyme. It follows the story of Hamlet, as he discovers his uncle has killed his father and married his mother. At the end everyone on stage is dead, except my character, Horatio.

We had a great time, got a standing ovation and lots of laughs, and now I can take a deep breath and look towards Easter. We are going to dig out our few decorations and check the freezer for a nice big ham.

Luna is comfy and in one of her favorite spots close to the wood stove.

Cheshire Cat is on his favorite place, my lap...

Robbi likes it outside where he can keep an eye on the deer and turkeys.

Here's hoping everyone has a great Easter. I am looking forward to enjoying our neighbors' eggs nicely hardboiled, and our ham, which is from pork we purchased from friends in February.
